Historical Background

The reed trio as a medium for chamber music evolved in France during the early years of the twentieth century. The first ensemble to gain widespread recognition was the Paris Reed Trio, formed by three eminent musicians of the French wind school who all taught at the Paris Conservatoire. They were able to popularise the format amongst students, composers and audiences and had soon commissioned or inspired many of the works that are now standard repertoire. The richly sonorous, versatile sound appealed to neo-classical composers seeking new means of expression (most members of Poulenc's influential circle known as "Les Six" wrote for the combination) but also attracted international figures including Martinú and Villa-Lobos. To increase the amount of classical repertoire transcriptions were made of works for neglected woodwind trios such as Mozart basset and Beethoven oboe trios. The success in Paris led to the formation of groups across Europe: the Berlin Wind Trio during the 1960's and 70's and more recently the Beaumont Reed Trio, have continued to inspire more exciting, innovative music from major composers.

Repertoire & Programmes

With a wealth of repertoire in their collection, you can choose from a number of innovative programmes, depending on your requirements and target audience. Along with the mainstream composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Françaix and Gordon Jacob, the Beaumont Reed Trio have premièred works by living composers such as Jennifer Fowler, Richard Lannoy, Ian Willcock and Robert Walker. In addition, substantial quantities of music were written by members of Les Six for this combination of instruments, all of it melodic, lyrical and virtuosic in style. A complete repertoire list is available, along with a demo CD in our brochure.
